Fantasy Baseball Questions .com's Fantasy Baseball Rankings (Positional)

Head to Head Scoring Top 5 Starting Pitchers (Points League)

1. Jake Peavy - SD. Peavy was a powerhouse all year long last year. He was 2nd in wins and 1st in Era last season. In h2h leagues Wins equal big points, to have a pitcher that you can count on for 15 or so wins is a good thing on draft day.

2. Johan Santana - MIN. Santana was low on wins last season with only 15. He pitched about 20 less innings than his last two seasons, those innings would have put him on par for more of a typical 16 win seasons. His K numbers are the only reason you draft him, and you start him every single game regardless of any other factors.

3. C. C. Sabathia - CLE. Sabathia came out last year as a bit of a surprise after disappointing numbers in 06 and 05. His Ks and Ws are both up significantly, he pitched 50 more innings last year, and he has proved to be his team's ace. Cleveland is at the top of the central so his totals could go up even further in 08.

4. Brandon Webb - ARI. Webb was a number pick last year for his consistency. And that is exactly what we can say about his totals. He started the same number of games for three years in a row, his game stats are almost mirrored from week to week, and he will pitch the occasional CG and SHO. All around hes a great pitcher with a low injury risk.

5. Josh Beckett - BOS. Beckett has always been one of those guys on the verge of the top of the draft. Last year sealed that deal. His wins were up and his negative categories were down aside from hits. He also plays for a team that should always provide run support, and most of the games last year that Beckett started were blowouts.

Roto Scoring Top 5 Starting Pitchers (5x5 League)

1. Brandon Webb - ARI. Webb is a beast across all categories, chances of you drafting two certified aces in a roto draft is rare so secure him quickly.

2. Jake Peavy - SD. Wins, Ks, Era, and Whip are all outstanding for Peavy. What do Peavy and Webb have in common? They both play for well rounded teams that give them a good chance to win each time they start.

3. Johan Santana - MIN. Very high Ks very low BBs. This is what you want in a Roto pitcher. The only reason he isn't higher are his wins and his high era.

4. C. C. Sabathia - CLE. 37 BBs in 241.0 IP is just plain crazy. 19 wins on top of that are you have yourself an ace in the hole, that hole being the AL central.

5. Erik Bedard - BAL. We know he plays for BAL and only pitched 182.0 innings last year, but you can't ignore 221 ks. With only 5 L his bullpen lost those games, not Bedard.

Now just because we rank 'em like this doesn't mean we wouldn't pick differently.

In both our H2H and ROTO drafts we are choosing, Brandon Webb, as our first pitcher.

Head to Head Scoring Top 5 Closers (Points League)

1. Francisco Rodriguez - LAA. F-Rod has had three incredible years in a row. That consistency should not change. He has had 40+ SV for three years now and will probably have 40 more this year.

2. J. J. Putz - SEA. Putz came out of nowhere last year and was consistent across all categories. 71.2 IP is a crucial stat. Putz gives your H2H team more opportunities to win due to increased play.

3. Francisco Cordero - CIN. Cordero has been an up and down closer. MIL kept him in ball games and now with CIN who lacked a true closer, more save chances should present themselves. You can't argue with 44 SV, 86 K, and only 18 BB.

4. Jose Valverde - HOU. Valverde came into his own last year on a winning ball club. This off-season HOU added a lot of weapons to put them into position to win. His trend should continue.

5. Joe Borowski - CLE. You cannot argue with 45 SV as bad as a 5.07 Era is. CLE is a winning team and as long as Borowski is their closer, hes worth a play. He's the American League's version of Trevor Hoffman.

Roto Scoring Top 5 Starting Pitchers (5x5 League)

1.2.3.4. The difference here is simply the scoring categories. In Roto leagues closers can hurt your weekly totals, but typically you are only using them for SV. Closers with low Whip will help keep that stat in check since they typically pitch every few days.

5. Takashi Saito - LAD. Saito's K total did go down last year as did his IP but a .072 Whip is great and 39 saves means you can nab him in the later rounds when other people are sleeping. Borowski's Era keeps him out of this top 5, in H2H era isn't scored as highly.

In our H2H draft we would choose, Francisco Rodriguez, as our first closer. In our ROTO draft we would choose, J.J. Putz, as our first closer.
